I would suggest another location, such as /home/multimedia, for a couple of
reasons, mostly personal preference. I don't like to clutter up my root
directory, and it's easier to manage backups by locating all user files
under /home.
Adding users to a group multimedia sounds like a good idea. You might also
want to set the sticky bit on the directory multimedia: "When the sticky bit
is set on a directory, files in that directory may be unlinked or renamed
only by root or their owner. Without the sticky bit, anyone able to write to
the directory can delete or rename files. The sticky bit is commonly found on
directories, such as /tmp, that are world-writable. "
