Hmm, I used Automatix on Dapper, but I converted to edgy long before
it was ready. It provided Java, codecs, mp3stuff, dvss2, etc. - all I
needed -- after posting a nastygram that all this stuff is highly
illegal <grin>..

Never fear, go to the following url for the standard ways of getting
what you need.

PS, I don't have a clue about 'R'.

I've had good results installing the occasional .deb with

dpkg -i <name of deb>
