Had the same kind of problem (and other various weird stuff)

SiiL 3112 and a WD 300GB SATA drive ..

My fstab shows:

/dev/sda1  /export/sata ext3 defaults 1 2

It was something to do with the way the modules when/were being loaded
I had to force the module to load in (Slackware 10.2) in the /etc/rc.d/rc.modules
right after Quota stuff.

Originally I had a mount command in the /etc/rc.d/rc.local AFTER the system
came up , but then it would not be writable. Adding the MODULES stuff
allowed the system do things normally and has worked ever since.

Don't know if this info works for you, but at least it is someplace
to start.
