modem chip

The ActionTec modem I'm using is supposed to be Linux compatible, and it was 
(as I explained earlier).
Now it only works with my winXP.  Could I have buggered it up when I had the 
box open putting in the new hard drive so that it only works with the win 
drivers?  Is there a way I can list the chip with out getting on my belly, 
pulling out the box and opening it and pulling the modem to see what chip is 
in it and trying to find a winmodem driver?
