Read/Write access to openldap address books from mail clients

I've been working with openldap address books to work with various e-mail
clients, setting up the openldap structure in the structure used by the
horde/imp/turba/kronolith packages. Things work nicely within the horde
family with a globally shared address book and indivdidual personal address
books. Logged in users can add/modify/delete entries in the public and
private address books.
I can access these address books from other mail clients including
Thunderbird, sylpheed-claws, Apple's Mail.app, and Entourage, but these all
seem to be read only. I don't know enough about openldap to know whether
this is normal, or if there's a way to get read and write access from these
clients.
I would think that there would have to be some way to configure the mail
client to generate the proper DN when adding new entries (turba
configuration has this), but this wouldn't be necessary to modify or delete
existing entries.
