Maybe I'm missing something, but I've never thought of dd as a "ripping" 
program. To me, ripping means extracting specific information (music 
tracks, scenes, features) to a file. Whereas I've always used dd as a 
way to grab a bitstream from a device without much regard to the content 
or format.

Exactly how would you do that with dd?
