Disappearing /dev/sd's

Those can be really flakey. Depends on exactly how much power is at the USB
port, size of the USB cable, wear on the connectors, phase of the moon. I
prefer the powered ones whenever possible. They also die frequently in my
experience.
You might move it to another system and see if it works there.
