Disappearing /dev/sd's

I have this problem regularly with certain USB drives. I remedy it by power 
cycling the USB drive. Then the /dev/sdx reappears and all is well. Note that 
it doesn't help to just unplug/plug the USB cord. So I concluded that the 
problem is in the USB drive itself rather a failure of Linux to recognize it. 
Mine are Ubuntu systems.
