Configuring Thunderbird to update LDAP address books

I've been trying to figure out LDAP address books as they work
with Thunderbird, and have most things working, at least as far
as read-only access to the LDAP server is concerned.
I have Thunderbird binding to the LDAP server with the proper DN
and password to be able to update the date (the ACLs give write
permission to the user, and none to anybody else so it wouldn't
be able to read if it weren't authentication).
What I can't figure out is what is necessary to get Thunderbird
to be able to edit existing entries, and to add to the address
book. So far the only mail client I've been able to get to do
this is horde/imp/turba. The documentation I've found on the
Mozilla site has detailled instructions on how to test the LDAP
functions, but I didn't find anything that would tell how to do
things like generate proper DNs for adding new entries, or how to
get update access.
