From where I sit, Debian got caught up in the "rock solid" mantra. (A
really good idea and concept!) The problem was that in practice, it
meant that they were getting further and further behind where the
industry was. Shuttleworth took their ideas and work and brought it,
kicking and screaming, up to current standards.
This is not about distros, this is about some hard working folks getting
their feelings severely fractured. In short, it is politics. Bad
feelings are there, but they tend to be localized (I go to school with
one of the Debian developers.) Opinions are strong, and loud.
I think the best solution is somewhere in the middle of the two
attitudes, but that is me. Right now, there are two groups that want
exactly the same thing, but are pursuing vastly different paths to get
there. There is bound to be a bit of friction.
