Right. Harry's original problem was that he was trying to use a Xerox provided 
shell script to install the printer driver, which, in my experience, knew 
nothing about CUPS and was written to install an old-fashioned UNIX lpr/lpd 
printer & filter. What I was trying to tell him was to screw the UNIX install 
script and just to install it himself as a CUPS printer.

Xerox printers come with a tar bundle which includes the installer as well as 
a PPD file. As you say, you just need to copy the PPD file to the cups 
directory (/usr/share/cups/model, in my case) and install the printer with 
any of the normal tools, command line, or gui of your choice.
