PCMCIA subsystem seemingly dead on Breezy install

hi all,
Yesterday I had my laptop power down and when it came back up, PCMCIA was no
longer working. The one slot showed up to the OS, but when I plugged and
unplugged cards, nothing happened.
Then I remembered setting my memory down. I recently upgraded to 1GB RAM,
which was more than my SWAP space. This is important because after
upgrading, Suspend to Disk took on a level of risk that makes Vegas look like
a good bet. So, to attempt to lessen the workable memory to squeeze inside
the 960M SWAP partition, I added "mem=940M" to my kernel boot line in grub.
Since removing that line makes my PCMCIA subsystem operate correctly again, I
can only assume that this parameter is what broke it. Can anyone share why
this might be?
Thanks!
Matt
