Password expiry notifications

Posted this to the CentOS list but got no response, so maybe some of
you gurus have suggestions? Doesn't need to be an RH only solution.

---

Just curiopus to know if any of you maintain large numbers of users
with LDAP (or other)? We have a continuing problem with users letting
their passwords expire and finding out days or weeks later when they
actually logout. We send warning emails, but apparently these same
users can't read email either.

Most of our users remain logged on for weeks on end under KDE, so they
never see the "your password will expire in ?? days" messages that
LDAP provides at login, and we have to reset their passwords manually
when they finally logout.

Does anyone know of an alert mechanism that can be programmed to pop
up on a user's desktop in a gui (KDE or other) environment - sort of a
KDE cron function?

BTW, we're stuck on RHEL4 since the company just loves to pay those
service contracts, but any CentOS experience should be applicable to
us.

TIA,
