Alarm over. I was at wits end with what looked to be the most bizarre
error. Turned out I was trying to have process 0 exit. Madness was
guaranteed for all. I have (I think) sorted it out. The mystery here is
how the error was not exercised immediately, instead of after a year or
so of use. If only Linux was less stable...
