I had a second to look back over emails I've missed on the list (sorry, don't
get much chance to read you guys), and found it interesting that Cyrus wasn't
mentioned much.

It's no surprise. Managing Cyrus is not for the faint of heart, since it
really seems like a Mail server Component than a system, intended to be
controlled by some Perl front-end. That's basically all the tools are, cli
tools written in perl giving a bit of power if you know how to wield it.

I use Postfix/Cyrus for everything I do, since I basically use the BigBlock
appliances I've developed. Cyrus was chosen over UW because UW couldn't
handle folders *and* email being saved in the same folders, and the security
benefits of restricted user access.

Postfix has been a nobrainer for the MTA. Sendmail may be more powerful, but
not enough to overcome the interface inadequacies. Postfix supports
everything I need out of the box (no, I don't see the huge need for MILTER in
my work, but I do use SPF, RBL, Virusscanning, authenticated SMTP, SASL,
STARTTLS)

As a LDA, however, Cyrus presented its difficulties. It scales great, and has
a great deal of enterprise value in its partitionability, intelligent
indexing, etc. I ended up writing a few scripts to simplify the creation and
deletion of email accounts. One script gets launched by Webmin's Create New
User function, which then creates the necessary mailbox.

I have heard a mix of good and bad about Courier, and will likely try it
someday. It seems the "other" OSS IMAP provider good enough for the
enterprise. IIRC, it doesn't integrate with anything easily, though. Isn't
it somewhat of a black box, providing it's own everything?

Anyway, back to the other mounds of emails I haven't read.

Ciao,
Matt
