firefox 1.5, java 1.5 plugins not working

I have /usr/lib/firefox-$version with it's requisite plugins directory.
/usr/lib/firefox does not exist.


I do have a  ~/.mozilla/plugins and ~/.mozilla/firefox/plugins that I
just created and linked the libjava plugin there.  Still no go. 
Normally this wouldn't be a big deal for me, but I've doing a bit a
cisco stuff lately and the PDM and SDM are rather handy, 



I did the link to version 1.0.7 of firefox and that does work.  Odd... 
Is there any type of debug level switch when starting firefox?  firefox
--help doesn't list one, but maybe there is one not documented by --help?
