I'm not sure that the load on the IMAP server is the important factor.
Thunderbird is quite fast dealing with my IMAP folders where many of the
folders have > 4,000 messages in them. On the other hand, Apple's Mail.app
is quite slow on the same mail stores.

I haven't seen any funky namespace problems using IMP with courier-imap.
Our main webmail server here uses IMP as the primary login for horde, and
allows one to select from several back-end IMAP servers and associated
domains.
