Ubuntu ...

Just a few comments in no particular order:
1. Yep, Shuttleworth makes lots of CDs available.
2. The binaries may get a little out of sync with Debian, but Ubuntu
resyncs with debian testing about every 6 months. OTH, if they choose
to fix stuff that debian chooses to sit on for a while, I have no
problem with that. Let the purists worry.
3.sudo. Old habits die hard. I just sudo su -, and you've got root
like on any other distro. Tastes differ. At work we choose not to
distribute a root password and use sudo su - on our RH systems. Big
deal.
4. Ubuntu is quite stable, and so is Kubuntu. It's really an urban
myth that Kubuntu is less stable. This is partly due to the fact that
Ubuntu in good Debian fashion considers Gnome to be the desired (or
only) desktop environment, so not as much attention is paid to
Kubuntu. Even my Dapper Kubuntu system is quite stable.
5. Different strokes for different folks. Some may be underwhelmed,
but many like it just fine.
6. Ubuntu has done a good job of attracting folks who are extreme
newbies to Debian land. On the pure Debian lists and forums, these
folks would be crushed the first time they dared to open their mouths.
7. I happen to like it just as much as Fedora or CentOS (RHEL) and a
lot better than SuSE or Mandriva. Tastes are like A------s; everyone
has one.
