firefox extensions silently fail to update

[Net Llama!]

I'm running firefox-1.5.0.1 (from the official tarball).  On one system, 
for one user, whenever I update the extensions, firefox acts like its 
updating them to a newer version, yet after restarting firefox, I'm 
running the older versions all over again.

Anyone have any ideas, or seen this behavior before?
