[OT] anti-virus opins?

The best one I ever saw was IBM's. It was really small, and not as
dependent on virus definitions as most. And its updates were downloaded and
installed separately, meaning you could download where you had broadband and
install where you had dialup, or an enterprise could download them
centrally. Symantec bought their technology when they stopped selling it,
but I've never seen that Norton has any of its advantages.

When we were using it, McAfee seemed to be the worst of all possible
solutions. Its updates were almost always full re-installs of the
program--and sometimes crashed the system. Granted, that was in Windows 3.1
days, but I haven't been willing to risk that kind of grief since.

We used and liked CA at work till it seemed like the management features
either went away or became separately priced from the client. We were still
going to go with it over Norton, but discovered AVG, and it has done pretty
well for us.

I'd be using the free version of AVG at home (back on Windows after about
five wears without), but AT&T supplies a subscription to CA with broadband.
I didn't really notice any problems with the trial of Symantec I got with
the PC, but maybe that's because I added a GB of memory pretty quick. It
might have been different with just 256MB.

And for personal use AVG is free, and there are rebates that will make CA's
boxed products close to free.

Subject: [OT] anti-virus opins?

Anyone have opinions on antivirus software for windows? Wife's office uses
MacAfee and Norton, both heavy on resources, and I've been hearing good
things about Panda being lighter and quite effective, as well as more
reasonable prices. Thoughts?
