It's the new kernel bunch having a go with us that have sata drives and
instead of being /dev/sda it's being turned into /dev/hda somehow
through udev or the kernel or something. This does sound kinda lame, but
I'm not an expert on the underpinnings of the kernel devel.
I just read that the use of SCSI for SATA is being deprecated. When I
launch xine it looks for my CD/DvD drive as /dev/hda as it is the first,
and proceeds to not find it. My harddrive is the second. /etc/fstab does
not refer to either drive specifically by device, as in the "Good Old
Days" (TM) instead it's echoing back to software managers of the drives
and that may be where the problem lies.
When I boot, /dev/sda scrolls by as found, as is /dev/sdb. That's the
last time the system refers to them that I can see. Everything switches
to /dev/hda and /dev/hdb from my admittedly limited perspectives. That's
what I >think< I am seeing and wondering if anyone else can lend some
insight to this. Bob, it may some something related to having a newer
kernel and new rules that aren't completely ironed out. I wish they
would return to keeping stuff simple and fast. I'm feeling like a
Dinosaur. Ric
