It's certainly a local problem where the cables are above ground as
they are here in the Puget Sound area. On the other hand, the telcos
probably have a better record of keeping their systems up and running
as we have *NEVER* had a phone outage in the 24 years we've been here
(and power outages are a regular occurrence such that I rarely have to
run my generator just to charge its starting battery :-).
You don't need expensive diesel power generators. I have a Honda
EU3000is gas generator that kept our computers up for the week we were
without power. It's extremely quiet, consumes about 7 gallons of gas
a day keeping all our systems running, and has an MSRP of $1,995.00.
