The first rule of driving in snow/slush/ice is: never use brakes.
I've driven in crap in Germany with my 83 Peugeot diesel: 5-speed with
limited slip differential.
To slow down, I back off the "gas" pedal and engine braking slows it
down. (Snow tires help too.)
The only advantage 4-wheel drive has is higher ground clearance, i.e.
can drive through deeper snow.
A 4-wheeler with manual shift will have a bit better engine braking
effect, but is also trickier because the front tires can lose
directional authority. A 4-wheeler with automatic transmission in the
hands of a typical driver is even more dangerous than a regular car.
For that reason I stay home when it snows here; I can handle the roads
with my car, but not the other drivers who can't.
