When I first moved to Montana I was surprised to see 55 MPH speed limit
signs on the Interstate. I thought there was no speed limit. I got
pulled for doing 70 within weeks. The Officer asked for my license,
registration, proof of insurance and asked me if I knew that by going
over the posted 55MPH speed limit I was wasting "Natural Resources'?
WTF? Excuse me? "Well, by driving over 55 MPH you are consuming more gas
that you would at 55." He pulled out a sticky note looking pad that was
pre-printed with "Pay the Officer $5 or mail it in to this address." It
was like Monopoly "Get out of Jail for $5" !! I paid the 5 bucks and
thanked the nice man. That was how they got around not having a speed
limit, for the fedral states highway funds, by posting the 55 MPH signs
and charged you for wasting gas, not speeding. Car insurance is really
cheap there... you'll never get points for speeding.
Here's the deal, with all those good God-Fearing Irish Catholics there,
with no traffic courts to speak of, no Judge, Bailiffs, court recorders,
utilities, buildings, networks and computers, and software to support
the infrastructure to keep track of "points", the overhead is really
low!! No huge tax burden so there is no sales tax.
They didn't have a third shift at the Highway Patrol, either. If you're
God-Fearin', you'll be at home or in a motel room by Midnight. If you
hit a tree at 2AM, they'll get to you when the first shift comes on at
around 6AM. Saves on the salaries that would be spent protecting the
stupid. Evolution in Action. Ric
