If nothing else works, why not give Nero Linux a try:
you can download a trial version at http://www.nero.com/eng/NeroLINUX.html

It is independent of cdrecord.

I use Nero Linux to burn DVD's on an older Libranet release since its 
kb3 does not support DVD burning.
(Upgrading KDE on this system is out of the question for a number of 
reasons.)
