Hey! That makes the net SO much more interesting. I mean where's the fun
in ssh? I miss the good ole days.
Taking a trip in the way-back machine, a buddy of mine was hired to work
on the old Telemail system. We never pirated HIS stuff, because it was
cheap and it really worked... Apple][ com programs. We used his stuff to
exchange warez with all of my pirate buddies. Yes, I and a friend in
Friendswood Texas started T.A.G. (Thieves and Assassins Guild) for Space
Games and the like. <wink>
So, he invited a bunch of us to 'beta-test- his changes to the system. I
got in there, found GM and Ford Motor Co. and you could just read
anyone's mail. No passwords hardly at all. Then, after the free-ride was
almost over, he got the folks on DeafNet to let us in... he said they
weren't having a lot of fun and that we might could lend some spice to
the place. We did. Had a great time swapping softwarez until one of our
more rambunctious members started cursing like a sailor over how broken
"Lunar Rover" was... we all got kicked out. <cackles>
During the beta-test he gave me this huge passwd to use, in case my
usual login became broken, so I could get back to him. I tried it one
day... the Irish in me. I must have messed up one character in the
login, because $ signs started running across the parameter of my screen
and then "Welcome to City Corp of New York Fund Transfer! Please enter
your name and password:" This was WAY before electronic banking for the
common folk. All that money, just on the other side. I thought about it
for 1 minute and got the hell off. With maybe 40 modems in all of
Houston, I figured I could get traced way too easy. Of course I clicked
on "Save Session" and kept it for some time, just for bragging rights.
Anyone remember Drew Kaplin, the guy that ran those folksy ads in Byte
and Creative Computing? He had a lot of Irish in him! <evil grin> Ric
