Printing Problem Suse 10.2

I just recently upgraded my Suse 10.1 - 10.2

All went well, The auto update has been fixed in Suse 10.2 and the
system runs fine.

Well that is until I tried to print.

Adding a printer doen't work as it doesn't see my printer on the
parallel port

So I switched to a usb connection and it sees the printer now but still
won't print to it.

I've been attempting to fix it and have probably changed every setting
known to man and now have a huge headache and no idea how to get back to
square one.

Is there a good how to that a long time Linux user but certainly no guru
could read to try to put this back together.

My books are all version 8 and probably out of date bit it's all I had,
I also googled and got some tips but all my changes have lead me nowhere

I can say one thing I can make it print from the command line through
the parallel port and the usb connection

So at least I've learnt some things ...

It will not print from KDE, Gnome, Open Office or Mozilla, I had heard
some systems will print from one or the other but mine won't from any
program except the command line.

Any help is appreciated.
