I have used Rockwell/Conexant chipped winmodems [ 
http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/ ] in the past but the drivers are no 
longer open source and they want about 14USD for the full speed one it's 
restricted to 14400 for the trial version. So I would avoid that chipset 
despite it being on a lot of cheap winmodems.
