It might help if you told us which card you currently have, and in which
OS, and if its linux, which kernel version you're using.

FWIW, i've had no problems with Cisco aironet (expensive though) cards, or
Linksys cards under Linux.  I don't use windoze, so i can't comment on how
they work there.
