Hmmm! I don't run Gnome, but rather IceWM, and glxgears runs from a
terminal with no squawking, but it looks quite different than when I
used it on other distros. I don't get the frame rates echoed to the
terminal, and it looks as though it's running in syrup about 20 frames
per sec!
