MySQL error on Ubuntu

In the past, I've been able to move my local phpBB (not 2.0) system
from machine to machine (from Gentoo to CentOS for example) by copying
the /var/lib/mysql/phpBB directory to my new system and the php code
to a directory under my new docroot. Worked like a charm,.

 When I tried moving this from CentOS to Ubuntu, the system works for
password login and displaying documents, but when I try to edit and
submit changes, I get the following error.

SQL Error : 1105 File '/usr/share/mysql/charsets/?.conf' not found (Errcode: 2)

Perhaps you Debian types can point me in the right direction?
