kubuntu 5.04 - a pleasant experience

I can't begin to express adequately how impressed I am with this
distro. This is Debian as it should be - without the attitude and
without the Gnome crap (editor's opinion) and pretty much up to date.
I started up last night with an install on my older machine (Athlon)
and liked it so well that I've put it up on my main machine today.
Both the let-ubuntu-format the harddrive (used on the Athlon machine)
and the install-to-chosen-partitions for dual boot on a machine
already occupied by multiple Linux and Windows partitions worked like
a champ. They've even progressed to the point that multiple older
Linux flavors are properly detected and bootable after installing the
ubunto grub setup to the mbr.
The only minor wrinkle for me is that ubuntu chooses the highest
possible Monitor setting (1600x????) for X, so I had to fix that using
a scarcely readable terminal session.
If you try this, be sure to read the guide at
http://www.ubuntuguide.org for help with installing your favorite
software on top of the default set. It's rather gnome centric, but
there's a lot of good data anyway.
I spent a fair amount of time cruising the forums, and nary an RTFM or
I'm so much smarter than you in sight anywhere.
If I get enough stuff to work, I could become a Debian convert of the
ubuntu variety.
Enjoy.

Debugging is twice as hard as writing the code ... If you write
the code as cleverly as possible, you are, by definition, not
smart enough to debug it.
