Ok ok, I'm crazy...

I just have to share this little tidbit with you all because you're probably
the only ones who will appreciate it.
I'm at a client's location, having done some work for them tonight (Power
supply replacement), I also have been meaning to back up their data to
several DVD's. This isn't something that requires acls, so straight DVD
iso/ufs format will work. So I plug in my USB DVD burner, and instead of
plugging it into their server, I decide to burn the first disk from my
laptop, using an SMB connection. I know, stupid or crazy, or whatever. It's
my DVD, and since I own the consulting business I decide how much time to
bill for, it's my turn to test. I'm being a bit lazy because I like K3b
didn't feel like figuring out the exact syntax for burning a data DVD on the
fly.
So the first disk starts burning, I take a pit stop and when I return a few
minutes later, I'm at 3%, running at 0.10x burn speed... sometimes hitting
0.20x. I had other things to do so I let it run for a while. An
excruciating 40 minutes past and I'm still under 20%. Agonizingly slow from
the 802.11b connection I'm using (DOH!). Pondering whether to just toast the
DVD and start over using the wired ethernet card, I decided to hot-swap and
see if I could keep the DVD going (K3b shows that I have no buffer, software
or hardware). So I plug in my wired ethernet into their hub, and get prepped
(mental jumping jax and all that)... then I typed in the following:
$ sudo su
# ifconfig eth0 up ; bring up the wired ethernet card
# ifconfig ; pick the IP address from wifi
# ifconfig eth1 down; ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.234 netmask 255.255.255.0
broadcast 192.168.1.255; route add default gw 192.168.1.1
Just about immediately the speed ratings on the burn jumped 10x to almost
1.0x ;) I have just hot-swapped the network cards' addresses and kept the
DVD burning off that connection. heheh
Ok, so now you think I'm nuts. Oh well, thanks for reading anyway.
While I'm at it, given the audience, what should I type in to burn a DVD from
the server? I'm sure it'd be much faster, and I have another 4 of these
puppies to go. Probably not tonight though.
ciao,
Matt
