<OT> Ipod hard drives...

Slowly but surely, I'm turning into the neighborhood Ipod tech. Ever since my
son dropped and killed his 20gig Click.... I find myself working on more and
more Ipods than I ever thought possible. Seems my boy was so happy that dad
was able to pop a new hard drive into his "pod" that he must have told every
kid in 'hood of his good fortune...

Anyway, I'm home today with a complaining disc... not a computer disc, bt a
back disk... about l1 or l2 this time and I was bored has all get out...
So... go look at the latest Ipod in for repair... Yup... popped it open, swap
in a know good drive and... it's back in shape. I'll be putting a new drive
in this one later on, after the owners mom or dad skinny up for the new hard
drive.

Now what do I do?

I dug into the dead TOSHIBA MK2004GAL 20gig drives that I've been collecting
and started to pop a few apart. Wow, what a wonder of technology. Single,
1.8" platter, two heads and... small... almost too small. After about the
third dissection, I noticed something odd. They were all pretty much in the
same state of death.... that is, the heads that sweep across the platter were
at or near the outside of the disc... and it takes considerable effort to be
able to rotate the platter with a screw driver! Hmmmm.... reminded me of the
old Segate 251's (is the a 20megger?) with stiction problems... And these
toshibas aren't just stuck, they seem like they're welded in place...

I wonder if Toshiba knows about this?

:') <---- a very big grin....

Anyways, the MK2004GAL is out of production and is replaced by the MK2006GAL.
Same footprint and power requirements just a tad better specs in regards to
G-shock.... But no matter how much I've googled, no mention of "stiction",
etc.
