Strange HD

On a system (older) with a fujitsu 8Gig HD I keep getting strange
results from "df -h". I have put way too much stuff on it df -h reported
that there was 0 space left on the drive. I then "rm -f *.*" of the
/usr/portage/distfiles directory, "rm -f *.iso" in my download directory
(five 600+meg files) along with other files I had floating around. "df
-h" still reports 0M remaining free. This is on a Gentoo 2.6.12
kernel. I then decided to check the drive . Using knoppix 3.9 ran
e2fsck on an unmounted /dev/hda3 which shown 2.3% non-contiguous. The
file system on this drive is ext3. Could this be a journaling problem?
I'm totally lost here.
