converting VHS to digital

Our tenant has a box that does the conversion of VHS to a digital stream 
which he uses on OSX.  I will find out about it and see if there is open 
source software.  The box is about $250 and I know they have them at the 
Apple store.  He works at Google and they are linux/MAC heads so someone 
there should know.
