Thanks Lonni.  That's what I wondered.  I just installed this daemon
on this laptop.  We'll see what I can tell from there.  Perhaps the
controller or cable is frying mid-stream...  While I can envision the
laptop crashing with hi-disk utilization, I can't imagine it doing
this much damage...
