I don't have a clue about your specific scheduler request, but I
always get these lines in dmesg when probing the interface:

Probing IDE interface ide0...
hda: Maxtor 4R080J0, ATA DISK drive
hdb: Maxtor 6Y160P0, ATA DISK drive
Using cfq io scheduler                             <== this is what I'm using
