I hate to burst your bubble, but i doubt that's going to happen (or at
least not by me). I only am dealing with gentoo because there's a bunch
of potential bugs from people using gentoo + the nvidia driver. They're
mostly "i'm using 1.0-7174 with $NVIDIA_CARD and X locks up". I'm just
trying to get them reproduced so the sw engr group can attempt to fix them.

Tell you what. If you can point me to step-by-step instructions on how
to create an ebuild, i'll see what i can do to create an 'unofficial'
nvidia driver ebuild.

Well interestingly, the manager of the linux driver team uses gentoo,
although i've not had a chance to ask him what he does to get the driver
installed. Granted, he's likely using a pre-release driver much of the
time for testing purposes.
As for my original problem, i ended up just extracting the driver with
"--extract-only" and then just running 'make install' and it installed
properly. gentoo seems to do some really weird things with some of the
opengl librariries that confuse the nvidia installer into thinking that
the wrong version is installed.
