Sounds like "sticktion". Where the heads tend to stick to the platter
and the motor does not have enough starting torque to get the platter
spinning again. The solution that has worked for me several times, is to
place the drive in the freezer. Yup, get in thouroughly cold.
Take it out of the freezer, reconnect it to the computer, and power it
up! Nine times out of ten it will spin up just fine. Let it warm up for
awhile just spinning (~10 minutes), then begin reading the data off the
drive. If it is too cold when you begin the reads it *may* give some read
errors because things are dimensionally out of spec (cold DOES cause
metals to shrink and the heads may not perfectly line up over the data
tracks like they should). Just keep trying, it'll get better as the drive
warms up and comes back into alignment.
I have recovered data files off VERY old Macs and CP/M machines this
way.
