Ubuntu: Constant "dd" process?

Can someone shine some light on this issue for me?

ps ax shows the following:

3292 ?      Ss   0:00 /bin/dd bs 1 if /proc/kmsg of /var/run/klogd/kmsg
<snip>

This is a constant parasite on each Ubuntu (Kubuntu really) I run.
While I can tell what this might be doing, why?  And why just on Ubuntu?
