Interestingly enough, F.A. Hayek's book ``Road to Serfdom'', originally
published in 1944, pointed out many similarities between Hitler's rise to
power in Germany, and the actions of the people in power in Britain and the
United States at the time. Hayek, born in Austria in 1899, had grown up in
Austria and Germany, and had seen it first hand.

Hayek is not easy reading as he tends to long sentences with many
qualifying clauses, but I find it worth the effort to dig into it to
understand what he had to say.

Another book I just finished reading is Fareed Zakaria's ``The Future of
Freedom: Illiberal Democracy at Home and Abroad''. Zakaria makes many
interesting points relating to these although I think he's totally off base
in his conclusions about economics and the role of the Fed and Central
banks (which doesn't surprise me since he did his undergraduate work at
Yale, and got his PhD at Harvard :-).

There's no shortage of quotes saying much the same thing (BTW: I didn't
select the signature quote specific to this topic).

you make a declaration on paper that speech shall be free, you will have a
hundred lawyers proving that ``freedom does not mean abuse, nor liberty
