No apology necessary. You were right. It's better to say nothing (or, at
least admit your ignorance) than to say the wrong thing. ("Better to keep
quiet and let people think you are a fool, than to open your mouth and
confirm it!)
I've been trying to come to grips with framebuffers for some time now with
mixed results. I think this is where I became confused:
from vesafb.txt:

which, if I understand correctly (as Aakin pointed out) means that once you
select a graphics mode you have to live with it, but, as several have pointed
out, you can change fonts.

PS I entreat you guys to treat me as you would a child, with indulgence. You
guys are professionals and I'm just a businessman who's too cheap to hire you
and struggle to do this myself! :-)
