I use http://www.exit1.org/dvdrip/

If you have Debian or a clone, just apt-get Video::dvdrip

I RIP to max 700Mb .avi files and burn to CD.  Works great.  Note
that, for scrambled DVD's you need the libdvdcss2 library. 
Unscrambles the content scrambling system nonsense so you can RIP
scrambled content DVDs (most).
