$ dmesg | grep dup
eth0: Setting full-duplex based on MII#1 link partner capability of 45e1.
eth1: Setting full-duplex based on MII#1 link partner capability of 41e1.
I can try half-duplex when I get home, but why that should speed things
up eludes me.

I tried swapping cards and still have marginal performance. The current
cards are
00:0d.0 Ethernet controller: Lite-On Communications Inc LNE100TX (rev 20)
00:0f.0 Ethernet controller: 3Com Corporation 3c905B 100BaseTX [Cyclone] (rev 30)
