mkinitrd weirdness

Earlier today I had a Redhat EL 4 (Update 1) box where I had built a
2.6.12.1 kernel.
Each time I'd run mkinitrd to build the initrd for that new kernel, the
resulting initrd was a different size. This was with the same command,
run one time after another. The size differed by just a few bytes each
time, but it made no sense.
Anyone know of any good reasons why this could be happening?
