gmail + firefox woes

I'm hoping that someone else ran into this and figured out what was
wrong and how to fix it.

About 2 weeks ago, for no apparent reason, gmail started to do evil
things to firefox on my FC3 box. Basically what happens is that very
gradually over time, typing any email in gmail starts to peg the CPU to
the extent that the actual display of each letter that I type is
delayed. At first the delay is barely noticable, but grows worse over
time to the point where I'm lucky if i'm getting 1 letter every 3
seconds to show up in real time. The only thing that seems to fix it is
shutting down firefox and starting it up again.

I'm using the FC3 firefox RPM (which i'm semi-suspecting might be half
the problem), but I've been using the FC3 firefox RPM for over two
months now, and this problem starts about 2 weeks ago for no apparent
reason.

Its starting to drive me mad. Hopefully someone has a suggestion on
what is wrong.
