Installing grub to dual boot

Brad, I've installed scads of systems with Win2000 in hda1 and some 
variety of grub bearing Linux in hdaX. It has never been a problem.

The rule was always to load Winders first and then let Linux/Grub do 
it's thing. Something has obviously gone wrong in this case, but there 
is nothing intrinsically wrong with the layout you have.

The deprecation of grub-install is news to me also. Wonder what replaces 
it? It always "just worked" for me.
