I suppose you're correct. Perhaps it's more a matter of reliability
than compatibility. I had an old LinkSys 4-port Ethernet hub that
quit working one port at a time after about one year. The el cheapo
replacement, a Link-Max LM205, has been steady and reliable. I would
have thought that the LinkSys would outlast the off-brand unit...
