converting VHS to digital

I'm on a wireless connection that usually hits about 800kb per sec...

When I click on one of the pics on the index page, it takes about 15 seconds 
for the (4) pictures to load and it is obvious that they are coming in 
pieces...   that is, you can see the pic load slowly.

For as small as they are, and being only 4 of them, it does seem too slow 
which is why I asked if maybe you weren't putting up  like 1MB pics and then 
telling the browser to cut them to 640 x 480.
